A-B part 2

For the final A-B piece I initially wanted to make a phone app for android devices. It was an app for students at university to find things, such as, pubs, club, campuses, faculties, libraries, shops, gyms and so on. All they had to do was click on one of the options on the main menu and then a map would appear and show an icon for where they are. A lot of other clickable icons would come up showing where most places in the city are.Once clicked, it would give a description and review of the place. The map would help you find where the shops are and make finding things a lot easier.

When the geolocation code wasn't working and the google API wouldn't work on android phones because of copyright laws I decided I would make a booklet that got people from the uni library to the public library. It used hidden codes to give the directions to the map that explains how to get from one library to another.

A-B

Our brief was to create an interactive way of getting from A-B but before we did our final one we had to get into groups and create navigational systems concentrating on three main areas of it's design.

The first week we had to design symbols to get from A-B. Jack and I made and cut out little critters throwing a camera between them all the way up to the contemporary lens media area.

The second week we had to concentrate on type. Instead of just having it say where to go Jack and I wanted the audience to get the direction quickly without having to necessarily read the type but just glance at it.
The next part we had to look at was interaction. Jack and I decided that we definitely wanted this idea to be a lot more playful. we got some forks, tie racks, superglue, sticky wall hangers and string and this is what we came up with. It was a way of directing people using sound. It got them from the front door of TPH up the stairs to the canteen.

Playing with Numbers

This was our first brief from digital practice. We had to look at how numbers effect an animation so i played around with the numbers and this is what i got.

This is a link to the playing with numbers swf I made.

My Manifesto

Following the joint project brief, our next project handed to us was to write ourselves a manifesto. Our manifesto could be presented in anyway as long as the presentation was connected to the manifesto it's self. The manifesto I wrote was:

'My Manifesto
I, the dyslexic and dyspraxic designer, may struggle reading and writing exactly what should be read and written. The capital letter is clearer and images are easier to follow. My hinderance is also my positive attribute. My difficulty of the written art helps me understand imagery and makes me more visual. I understand numbers and usually pick up other languages quite easily but forget them quickly. The handwritten text is more human. Photos are as creative as paintings and films are not supposed to be realistic, but show a fictitious world. Art should always be expressive and not money making. Everything should be experimental and varying in techniques. Mistakes can and should be made. Amateur work can be professional but creativity should not meet any boundaries. An artist should never be pigeonholed in one are of design, and vice-versa.'
I wanted my manifesto to be able to be repeatedly produced but still with the humanistic aesthetic. I decided to get it etched in metal so all i had to do was apply ink and roll it on to paper. It came out looking like my hand writing every time.

Joint Projects

My last post previous to this one was a recap over my 1st year at university. From here it makes sense to look at 2nd year, and where better to start than the first project of the year. Start of the university year says 1st and 2nd year joint projects. There were 6 of us, 3 1st years and 3 2nd years. We had a brief that was to advertise an invite only exhibition called limited edition. We started off by naming our company, 'Oak', and then cracked on with how we wanted this piece to interact and look to an audience of designers. We designed invitations that would have hidden codes that would give co-ordinates to unlocking webpages so the audience to this show could read information about the people talking at the show.

Long Time No Post

I realise it has been a very long time since I last posted anything on here so to catch up I passed my first year and am now in 2nd year. In this post, to bring everyone up to date I decided it best to post a showreel of my work from first year so everyone can see what I have done. After this post you'll see this blog spot being updated a lot more.

Self Portraits

These are just some self portraits that i have used to portray myself by including objects, lighting and so on.

Portraits

This is some portrait work I did trying to convey different emotions and the struggle that the older generations could struggle through, whether it is stress, sense impairment or identity.
